Things I've Learned - Some the Hard Way

Random list of things I've learned lately.

When you get a new pair of black jeans and want to take them on your trip = be sure they get washed first - black dye is hard to get off your fingers, socks, white underwear...

Blue water on the bathroom floor is never good.

Free alcohol and snacks at 4 in the afternoon is very civilized and oh so sophisticated.

Shaving your bikini line hours before boarding an airplane for a multi-hour trip to a very warm climate = itchy bits you can't respectably scratch in public.

Rudeness crosses language barriers.

So does a smile and a respectful head bow.

The respectful two handed offering of a card is still alive in Hong Kong. I read about it in the guidebooks - how, when offering someone your business card or receiving one, you should always use both hands. This applies to credit cards and room keys as well and, for such a small thing, is actually pretty cool.

If your pants are a bit long in the crotch - your thighs will pay for it when the weather is 25C but feels like 35C with the humidity.

Apparently tall blonde women always want custom tailors, but women in Tilley hats want copy designer bags - or at least that's what I can infer based on the street hawkers approaching Leslie and me.

We both look like we need a massage - we get offered them quite frequently, but never by members of the Italian national rugby team - who I must admit have the hottest legs I've ever seen (except for First Lobster of course).

When a teenager is buying shorts in the market and says, "Its okay if they're too small", parental reaction is a lot different depending on the gender of the teenager.

Cashmere sweaters are manufactured in Inner Mongolia.

Cashmere costs a lot of money, regardless of where it's made.

Soft ice cream purchased from the ice cream truck tastes very different on a street in London, England, than one in Hong Kong, but they are both fabulous. The one in Hong Kong is a lot cheaper but doesn't come with a Cadbury Flake and strawberry sauce.

People in Beijing eat more franchised fast food (KFC, McDonalds,,,) than those in Hong Kong.

Just because you only need to travel 20 blocks, doesn't mean the taxi driver knows where the place you want to go is.

Having beer available in 7-Eleven can be a good thing.

A hard bed doesn't get any better the next night, or the one after that, or the one after that. But, if you didn't sleep well any of the first four nights doesn't mean you should lose hope for the 5th...

Visa is the same in Cantonese as in English.

If you look trashed, the guy pouring the free alcohol serves up a double without being asked.

When you really need to go...don't ask for the bathroom.....TOILET is the word to know!
