Third Time's A Charm

This cliché, usually used to inspire another go after two failed attempts, is supposed to magically impart success on the next try.

Awesome Boy was learning to wake board today, and after two almost successful attempts at getting up, his dad piped up with the aforementioned cliché. Sadly, it did not come true.

Here’s my “Third Time’s A Charm” story.

The first time First Lobster lost his wedding ring was on Grey Cup Sunday as he was putting up Christmas lights. He flung some snow off his hand and that was it – his ring had disappeared in the white depths. I found the ring in April while(repeatedly) raking the grass.

After hitting the ditch near the end of another winter, First Lobster climbed out of the truck into knee-deep snow. Again, with the snow flinging and again with the ring disappearing into the white depths. We returned to the scene of the ditch diving that weekend and in less than fifteen minutes spotted that telltale gold gleam. That’s when he tempted fate and said, “The third time I lose it we won’t get it back”.

Today was the third time. First Lobster was enjoying some quality time on a tube behind the boat. The sun was shining, the water was calm, and the theme song from Miami Vice was playing in our heads. Quite unexpectedly First Lobster met the surface of the lake in a rather abrupt and nasty manner. First Lobster resurfaced from the green depths but sadly his ring did not. As the lake is 475 feet deep at this point, I have a sneaking suspicion that, indeed, we might not get it back this time.

If you ever catch a fish on Okanagan Lake and find a ring in its belly, please, call me. I’d love to prove my man wrong.
