Why Do Farts Sound Like That?

Why do farts make the noise they do? - For the same reason flags flap in the wind.

The flagpole causes the flag to wave. As the wind hits the flag pole it sheds pressure vortices around alternating sides of the pole - the flag is then pushed by the vortices back and forth.

If you stand outside on a windy day and hold a piece of paper by the top, it will not wave. If you hold it by the leading edge, your hand becomes the flag pole and it will flap.

The skin at the edge of the anal sphincter causes the alternating wind pattern, resulting in the flapping of the cheeks which causes the distinctive ripping sound.

Useless piece of information courtesy of Useless Factoid Friday.
This may be a timely piece of info in light of the large meal you may be eating this weekend - now you can explain it scientifically. I'm sure if my dad reads this he'll some how insinuate that he is saluting the flag when we catch him breaking wind after Thanksiving dinner.

Happy Thanksgiving!
